One People

The news had always been my least favorite show on television. I think it’s too honest. And when I am confronted with the realities of life, I find myself sighing with complete disbelief – or at least a frustrated attempt at denial. I’m one of those people who never fully let go of childhood fantasies. Fairytales taught me to believe. And I do take every possibility into consideration, no matter how undefined the chances may be.

Humans are a diverse species. We may all look the same, at an anatomical perspective; but when two or more men work together, there is a greater tendency for war than peace, for failure than progress. The most public group of people in every nation is perhaps the congress. And they fight – a lot – verbally. In school, we are often divided into groups and there always seems to be a clash of ideas between members. They say two heads are better than one – but this only holds true when those heads function similarly. And that can be numerically translated to zero times. But on second thought, there can be ONE time.

sinulog

Once a year, in the Queen City of the Philippines, people come together to praise and adore the child Jesus, Sr. Sto. Nino. I’m not a native of the city, and therefore did not grow up celebrating the Sinulog festival annually. However, the tides of fate brought me to experiencing the event firsthand this year. And the minute I set foot on the grounds of the Basilica on the first day of Novena, I was in awe. The multitude of people who came was overwhelming. Seeing the sincerity of their hearts in their eyes gave me goosebumps. And their singing aloud in chorus with one beat and rhythm brought me to tears. I had never been happier to be one with a crowd – which was in turn, ONE people in the name of God. Right then and there, I knew in my heart it was okay to hope.

If one mysterious child brought thousands of people together, unity shouldn’t be so much of an issue anymore. And if that annual oneness in Christ could touch one girl’s heart, influencing positive change for our nation should soon find its way towards the most obvious manifestation.
